Even after childproofing, however, you need to be vigilant about watching your child during all times of the day.
Babies can touch, chew and taste just about anything and some things can be hazardous. Remember, too, that they develop the capacity to climb, crawl or get into just about anything relatively soon in their lives so that you need to childproof things you hadn’t thought you might need to childproof.
Child Safety Gates
You need to install child safety gates at doors you don’t want your child to go through and at the top and bottom of all stairs. Use door knob covers for other doors and for exterior doors so baby cannot get outside without your knowing about it. Toddlers are especially fast and can get into the street before you know it.
If you have a deck with slats less than three inches apart, install deck mesh to keep the baby from getting caught in the slats. Acrylic slabs work well for interior banisters or railings. They don’t look bad and are safe for baby while he or she is learning how to walk and crawl.
Around the Home Safety Items
Remember that toddlers and babies are attracted to outlets and can put wet fingers or metallic objects into them. Use outlet covers or replace your face plates with those that slide shut when the outlet isn’t in use. You should also put padding around any sharp furniture such as coffee tables or fireplace surrounds.
Outdoors Safety Measures
You need to think about protecting outdoor areas as well, such as swimming pool areas and areas the child could fall into like wells and off overhangs in the landscape. Fence off all hazardous areas and make sure any outdoor play equipment you purchase is safe for babies and toddlers.
You should replace hard seats on the swing set with soft ones and the steps on play equipment should be surfaced with a nonslip overcoat. These are just a few of the easy, yet important, things you need to do to your home to make it safe for your baby and child.
