Switching to cows milk

Submitted by Courtney

"My daughter Charlotte is now 1 year old, and my mid wife told me I could start her on cows milk now. She is on NAN 2 at the moment. How do I introduce this? She does like cows milk, and since I've finished the formula tin, don't want to give her it again. And what about night time when she wants a bottle? Should I just warm up the cows milk???? Thanks"

what i did with my girls is i weaned them onto it mixing there made up toddler formula with some cows milk till eventually it was just being made up with cows milk i did this over a week and a half or what suites you! as i heard that its less harsh on there tummys to have a slow change, this seemed to work great for us, neither girls threw up or disliked the cows milk warmed up either! good luck!! Jasmine. P.S let us know how you go!!

Hi, With my daughter i started giving her 120ml of warmed up cows milk for her day time naps and formula at night, and after 3 days of that i started the warm cows milk at night too, we had no problems but i guess each baby is different.

I've been told that once a baby is 12 months old breast milk, formula and even cows milk aren't necessary. As long as your baby is eating all of the right things - dairy, vegies, fruit - all of the things to keep them healthy, then milk isn't a necessity anymore. Plus, continuing with the milk when it really isn't necessary could also add to frustration later on when the baby doesn't want to give up the bottle. My sisters baby is about 18 months and she's still having formula but that's only because she refuses to eat enough real food and she needs the formula to supplement her diet. So yeah, that's just what I've been told :)

Hey there zanabele, just wanted to reply to your posting, as it just concerned me that someone would have told you that our little ones dont need milk. Unless your child refuses to drink it, it is really a necessity to have dairy in our little ones diets. I understand they can getit fromcheese and yogurt, but we all need our milk. Recently it has been said that as we get older we dont recieve the recommended calcium intake from cows milk, but that is when we are old and need to take calcium supplements....

I think our little ones need the best start in life and milk is great for there rapidly growing bones. Thanks anyways

Hi. My Kooper has just started cows milk for the night time bottle.. He is 13months and started with 100ml cows milk and 100mls toddler drink.. And after about a week I went with 150mls cows milk and 50mls of formula. I like the idea of just that little extra help with nutrients etc in the formula. He eats very well, but it all helps. I still warm it up just a bit to take the chill out of the milk. I use the Heinz 3 toddler drink - Koops loves it.. Hope that helps - and remember, Your baby, Your choice - as we all are different!
