That is when they do an internal and stretch your cervix open & sweep the membranes. It can bring on labour, but it can also accidentally rupture the membranes before bub is ready and can lead to infection and other complications. And it can be bloody painful

They did this to me 10 hours after my water broke to try to bring on my contractions. My lil girl decided she wasnt ready to come out. This is one of the "natural" methods they use to try to bring on your labour. It didnt work at all and it was extremely extremely painful. It really was a complete waste of time but i think they jus tried this cause my waters had broken. If i am even in the same situation again i will definately say NO to this. I know everyone is different but i hope this helps :)

I was 6 days overdue and the doctor did this to me to bring on the labour. It hurt like all heck...and then the doctor had the kindness to say "If you think that hurts, wait till you're actually IN labour!" Thanks doc...Anyways, that was about 11am and then the next morning at 2am while I was in bed my waters broke. Contractions started almost straight away and I had him 22 hours later (after 12 hours of really bad contractions I had an epidural - the most wonderful invention in the WORLD). What a lovely day that was....lol

They wanted to do it to me when i had to be Induced.. but I told them not too... but they did any way. Wasnt plesent.

ouch... im so glad they didnt do this to me!!! I was 9 days over due and was going to be induced at 11 days over due... I personally would have said no to the stretch and sweep as i feel that when your body is ready then it will do it its self!!! When i went into hospital 24 hours after my 1st contraction i was only 2cm dialated tho they thought i was futher so i asked for an epidural as i had been in pain for 24hours and was very very tried and weak... they then found out i wasnt as far along as they thought and told me they would try break my waters for me... they tried that too but obviously my body wasnt ready yet so it didnt happen!!!
So what im saying is, even if the doctors say it will move things along... it dosnt always apply for everyone! Goodluck!!!

they done this to me cos I was 8 days over due... and dont worry to much about the painfull stories It may of just been me but I didnt feel it was any more uncomfortable then a pap smear... and it definatly works I had id done Friday arvo, and was up the hospital Saturday morning with strong contraction and had him 9pm Saturday night.... GOOD LUCK its all worth it in the end!!
