"I am expecting my first born in the next few weeks, and I am terrified by all the information I've been given about SIDS. Has anyone ever lost a shild to SIDS or does anyone know someone who's lost a child to SIDS? Any stories or advice would be greatly appreciated."

Don't stress too much. As long as you're doing all the right things - they'll give you a pamphlet in your Bounty Bag - then there's not much more you can do. SIDS is still a mystery, no one really knows how or why it happens. All you can do is just make sure you're baby is safe and try not to worry. If it did happen, it wouldn't be because of something you did! It's one of those things that we can't really control. Just do all the right things and don't stress!

I agree... DONT STRESS!!!
There is more of a chance of other things happening far worse than SIDS...
The doctors are usually pretty good these days also... They check baby over very very well and any heart problems or breathing problems and they will make sure they do all the necessary things to ensure the well being of your bub!!!
If bub had breathing problems and you get worried i think there is a machine you can hire... so if bubs stops breathing it triggers the machine and makes a loud beep and bub gets the message to breath...
Its ususally the mums that do all the right things ect ect that it seems to happen too... just like other things i supose... so i wouldnt worry about it... of course the first few nights or weeks your gonna stress but thats just what being a mum is all about!!!
Goodluck with your up coming birth and just enjoy having your little baby... the sooner you know it they are going on two and wont give you a second to stop stressing!!!

My niece died from sids when she was nearly 3 months old. It was my sisters 5th baby. She was staying at my place for the night to have a girls day shopping the next day Her husband offered to look after the other kids. At about 7 in the monring she came into my room asking for the phone book. Her friend called her up saying that the other kids had been dropped off at her place because Angel (my niece) had been taken away in an ambulance. When my sister called the hospital She was put on to talk to her husband. I was with her when she got the news. It is the worst pain i ever felt. She has had another baby since... another boy (she now has 4 boys and a girl)
My sisters last baby was born a week after my daughter. When my mum found out we were pregnant, she went out and brought us both a set of baby monitors. The brand is Angelcare, u have a sensor mat that u lay under the cot matress. If the baby stops breathing, the monitor will detect this and an alarms sounds. This made me feel a whole lot better about the whole sids thing. I knew if my baby did stop breathing, that i would know straight away.
If you are really worried about sids, then id reccommend the angelcare monitors. Just try not to worry about it too much.
Also, i know that sids & kids reccomend breastfeeding for the first 6 months at least, a brand new cot mattress, no dummies, dont sleep the baby in the bed with u of a night, dont smoke around the baby and always lay the baby on it's back to sleep.
