Sexualising children for promotional purposes

Submitted by Courtney

"I was watching Insight on SBS the other night.. I KNOW WHAT A WIERDO! BUT in my defence it was a really intersting discussion, on sexualising children for promotional purpose....

What do all the mothers and fathers think of, for example, the padded bra for the 6 year olds, and the bratz doll range? "

I hate the thought of my 4 year old daughter dressing like a 15 year old girl.
i worked at Myer for about 1 year in children wear the customers that came in wanting there children to dress like they were in there teens was almost 80% we had a size 3-8 section and a 8-14 section i would get customers telling me that our stock should be for 3-14 year old girls. the clothes were very sexy and string backing for the older girls i would hate to see my 4 year old walking around like a sl*t excuse my French but alot of parents out there like their children looking older for some weird reason that doesn't a pill to me.

I dont agree with it either... Especially with babies. As cute as it may be there is no reason that they need to make short little black skirts in 000. They barely cover the nappy. The Bratz range are feral... I dont buy any of that crap for Kiara and I ask other people to do the same. They have to have a childhood.. They are not mini sized adults, they are children. They need to be able to have fun and learn and be little.

I think that if parents are dressing their kids like teenagers when they are small, what the hell will they be wearing when they ARE teenagers? I shudder at the thought. Those Bratz dolls are disgusting, they make my blood boil. For crying out loud, some of them are wearing g-strings! I don't think they are appropriate at all for children. In a world where our kids are already growing up too fast, do we really need to speed up the process even more?!

I don't agree with it either, although my niece does dress like a teenager  and she is only 6 and my sister thinks it's finny that her 6 year old wants to wear g-strings. My daughter will never beng doing this.

One of the arguments to the padded bra's for 6 year old was that our children already want to dress up like their mums and have been for centuries..... Personally i think this is a really bad example, as i think Let them dress up in our bras but they do not need their own, leave that for the dress up box, i would not let my daughter, when she is older of course, leave the house looking like she had a perfect set of perky breasts at the age of 6.

The whole subject made me so angry the other night, and the advertising company seems to think its all ok to be dressing these little girls up so provocatively. And like some of you said these bratz dollz are a great example of trying to sexualise our childrens world before they even hit puberty...To be honest it scares the hell out of me... And like one of the other ladies said, I will not buy my daughter these dolls and have asked everyone else not to...

Our children are not billboards... let them be children

I dont think babies and girls under the age of 13 should dress like they are teenagers for the pure fact that they are not! Little girls should look pretty and sweet! Im not saying a 10-12 year old should dress pretty in pink and all that, but they shouldnt be wearing mini skirts knee high boots and padded bras! none of us were!!! i know back in the day when we were young we looked like dags from the 80's and for some the 70's!!!!

If you want your daughters to look fashionable there are alot of beautiful clothes out there!!! I bought my 17 month old a pair of pink "skinny leg" jeans and a cute long sleeved pink top with glitter writing saying: "i didnt ask to be a princess, but if the crown fits!" It looks adorable on her and clearly "in fashion" and its from target they whole outfit cost was about $25. Setting a good example also helps when they get older! all little girls wanna dress up! i used to, but my grandmother gave us a whole heap of the dresses and night dresses she used to wear! it was so much fun and they were so glam and appropriate for us, there was no low cut or short dresses!

If you want your daughters to look "cool" just look at the fashion at the moment, its pretty covered up! a pair of 3/4 leggings looks really cute under a skirt, and it hides the nappy too!!! Dont even get me started on BRATZ! Thank goodness kyla loves hi-5 and wrestling figures! haha
