Help with Bronchiolitis
Submitted by Char

"I was just wondering if anyones babies have had Bronchiolitis? My son became sick about 4 days ago, with first a little cough, that turned into a weezy chest, and then a runny nose, and it got to the point where he wasn't drinking his bottle. He drank it, although he threw it all back up. And i mean ALL of it. It was scary because he seemed fine drinking it, then all of a sudden he would choke and vomit. I was just wondering whose babies had this, and how long it lasted? I had him in hospital all day yesterday under observations and they sent us home, because he seemed fine. He still has the cough and is drinking 60ML every now and again of his milk. I'm worried because I thought the 3rd, 4th and 5th days were the worst. We both had no sleep last night. I kept up with his dosages of panadol but I'm getting worried. I know all the signs for when to go back to hospital, and thank God he hasn't shown them yet, and he still has a wet nappy. Not as wet as usual though. Can anyone else offer me advice on how to make him feel any better??? What did anyone else do?? He just turned 5 months old. "

Hi there Char,I feel for you... i had my daughter up at the hospital two weeks ago, and she was in for three days and had to have surgery. not for broncitis of course but just a few things you have said seem similar to her syptoms. she had an IV so when we took her off the drip to come home we were given a list of things to watch for and how todeal with them... All i can suggest is keep an eye on his lips for dehydration, if you are worried about that get him some hydralite from the chemist in the morning, it is fantasic stuff. And dont be scared to keep the 4 hourly doses of panadol up they did it at the hospital for charlotte... it really does help with there pain. And we hate seeing them uncomfortable.maybe try some vics too.... of if you have one of those humidifyers.... i think thats what they are, some eucolyptus in that might help, maybe even sleep in the same room as him until you feel confident he is getting well. you probably wont sleep if you are worried, so sleeping near him might ease your stress a little. hey and i find that 13health number is good to call for advice on his condition, they kinda save you the trouble of going to the hospital and being told to go home after waiting for hours! they areonly nurses but its handy, if you dont trust there judgment get him to the docs in the morning.

As long as your child doesnt have asmatic problems then Vics or hot steam works wonders. I would suggest the cheap and easy way. Go to your bathroom and shut the door and put your shower on the hottest it will get and sit there with your child in your arms. If the bathroom is too large and wont steam then take a Hot Shower with him/her! I sware this works wonders and helps sooth them to sleep as well! Hot water in many aspects works wonders for the lungs, nose, boils, child that wont sleep etc........If you are worried though take your child back to the hospital. Doctors are not always right!!!! I recently just got out of the hospital which could of been avoided if treated sooner! This is a big problems with doctors..........and sorry to say I have had a horrible experience with Australian doctors......so if your concerned take your child back to the hospital. It cant hurt! Children when they are young turn sick very quickly as I am sure you are figuring out. It sounds to me that your doing everything right and as long as your child isnt dehydrated or having a hard time breathing then you are doing the work that you need to do at home. Is your little one on steriods??? This also helps out alot of the case is bad. Good luck and many prayers your way. Blessings,

In my experience i found charlotte HATED the steam on her in the bathroom, and maybe the shower idea isn't so good as we are in a drought... the dehumidifiers arent that pricey and they are a great thing to have in the house for cold and flues as your kids get older. and much more water efficient. Good luck anyways!

Hey Char,My daughter had this about 4 months ago now, it lasted almost a week! I was told to get these special icypole type things from the chemist, or even ice blocks so they dont dehydrate! Don't worry too much about it, if it lasts over a week then maybe take bub to see a specialist! although thats what i did and he only told me what my gp told me! So icypoles apparently work? and try water down his formula that way its not so thick, and try lemonade watered down? These are just the things the specialist told me, so give it a go and let me know how you went! Goodluck~! :)

Hey Char my son had this a while back, and we had a alot a sleepless nights and lots of changes of clothes with all the spewing he did, and when i took him to the hospital they said it was an acute symptom of it although he was soooo ill it upset me so much, I would take him in the shower with me coz he didnt wana lay in the bath and he would instantly fall asleep on my shoulder, i think it cleared up his nose. Plus i used that medic spray which works well to clear up there nasal pasage which usually helps them sleep better. I went to the doctors after being seen at the emergency room at the hospital and they gave me prescription for antiobotics im not sure if they give that to 5 months old!
U will both get through this, Hope all turns out well

Hi, I'm sure they would have told u to give him smaller bottles. but as for the cough it can last for a couple of weeks afta the seem better. i rushed my son to the hospital just the other week with the same problem. he had a fever. there isnt much they can do for them. all u can do is ride it out and if it gets worst take him back to the hospital. instead of offering formula try some water, weak cordial, watered down juice. but only smaller feeds. as its hard enough for them to breath let alone  drink at the same time, I hope this helps you.
