Getting rid of the dummy
Submitted by Denya

"I just wondering if anyone has any ideas for how to get rid of a dummy? My daughter has just turned 2 and I want to try and get rid of her dummys. I've tried cutting a small hole in it as my mum told me to do, but she still used it, my mother in-law told me to tell her the shop doesn't sell dummys anymore and take the rest off her, as that is what worked with her sons, but I dont think she is old enough to understand..... any one have any ideas?"

My Mum told my niece who lives with her she flushed it down the toilet. she actually threw the tummy behind the toilet so she thought she really did flush it. And kept one in the draw just incase she REALLY had a bad night.

Another one is maybe try putting something yukky tasting on all her dummies, and she might eventually just go off it.

good luck, I dread trying to get rid of charlottes, although i make her keep it in her bed unless she is sad or not feeling 100%, or hurts herself etc, or i take it with me when we go out for peace sake!

My2 1/2 year old knows that she can only have hers at bed time, but after we've finished potty training we are going to try and get rid of the dummy.
Mi sister is pregnant and due in march, when we go over for the birth Im going to see if my daughter will give her dummy to the baby as a present, so hopefully that will work.
So if you know anyone who is having a baby, see if that will work for her.

My friend got her daughter to throw them in the bin and say "Bye bye dummy" - I think that your daughter would understand that - 2 year olds are pretty bright. I'm sure you'll have a few nights of tears, but that happens with every change!

My son was 3 and still had the dummy then my daughter 9 months decided that she did'nt like them anymore so I told my son that he was getting to big and to be a big boy he should put them in the bin. So we went on a hunt ( they were all around the place ) and he put them in the bin, he did miss them and ask but i'd just remind him that we threw them all away and that he did'nt need them anymore. I never thought I'd get rid of them!

hey well wow this is making my baby sound kind of odd but aidan NEVER took the dummy, still wont and he'll be one next month, but because it's coming up to christmas you could try do what my sister in law did last year with her then 2 year old. she told him that santa had asked him to give him his dummy with the carrots and milk and in return santa would give him an extra present, that dummy got put out almost straight away and he had a few bad nights without it but they kept an extra one just in case.....even try giving it to her every second day at bedtime then gradually less and less so that she doesnt miss it....goodluck

Has your daughter got all of her teeth? If you daughter has teeth still coming through it isn't really fair to take it away yet cause even if they don't look like they are coming through they could be moving and hurting her.
If she has all her teeth, she doesn't really need her dummy anymore, my nephew turned two and his mummy told him that he was too old for his dummy now, threw them all out and after 3 days of winging that was it. (use the 'big girl' terms to help her understand)
I hope this helps! :)
