Germs & Baby's Immune System
Submitted by Cathy

"My baby has just started putting everything into her mouth and I'm worried about germs. I know she has to build up her immune system by being exposed to them... but I'm confused!  Do I wipe her toys every day against germs, or do I let them get dirty so she can build up her immune system?  Do I keep her away from all the plants in the garden in case she touches something nasty and then sucks on her hand???  What do other people do?"

Hi Cathy, what i do with my 15 month is i give her toys a spray with glen 20 once a week that has seemed to work for me as u said u dont want to go over board as they do need to build up a immune system, also my daughter is a lets play in the dirt kinda girl! so every after noon i let her loose in the garden about 30 min before her bath time and let her go wild every now and then she will put a finger thats been in the dirt in her mouth but i dont tend to worry as i know every other aspect of her is as healthy as i can make it!! im sure ur doing a great job keeping her nice and clean and healthy, just try not tow worry about the germ thing to much as i was a big worrier with my first!! you have lots more fun this way, but i do still love a good old wipe of the face and hands a few times a day if i do say so my self!! hehehe

I was reading an artical about baby's toys ect and germs it said your better off to let your baby come in contact with some germs or later in life you might have troubles. i wouldnt wipe the toys everytime maybe once a week depending on how dirty they get . i give my daughters things a good wash once a week to clean it up from all the saliva and lil spewy drool stains they never get excessively dirty and she doesn't ever get sick from anything. i dont really know about the garden though because there is more dangers out there than just the dirt like stinging insects and poisoness plants.but a little dirt never hurt anyone i think we've all eaten in in our life time hehe

In working in early childhood education we "sanatized" the toys everyday. If your child is sick it is good to clean the toys everyday. It is true about "building" a immune tolerance to certain bugs because if they dont they are more likely to get sick as an adult. I would suggest "washing" your childs hands and face etc when they do get dirty. As it is good to build up a healthy immune system is is also UNHEALTHY to subject your children to too many germs at once as they can become very ill and wont be able to fight off the illness as easliy or be hospitalized. Also, I have been told by doctors to give your child a "zinc" supplment if they have a hard time fighting off illnesses and dont have a "healthy" appetite.

I dont believe you should have to whipe your babies toys down EVERY day, unless heaps of other babies are sucking and drooling over the same toys. as you dont know if they are sick or what germs they are carrying.... that would be the reason they sanitize every day at daycare. C harlotte was a serious puker when she startd crawling so i was forever whiping up after her, but i never "sanitized" anything, whiped them over, but no other children sucked on her toys... If your baby is sick on them, than yes probably clean it for the sake of the toys lasting. and puke doesn't smell to nice either.

I moved all my plants outside when charlotte started crawling. as i found out most of myinside plants where quite dangerous... and as for potting mix, that is not a good thing to let your little ones munch on.. i found out one day when my daughter was eating it, my father inlaw told me its not a good idea because of a certain bacteria in it. G ood luck!
