Circumsision, yes or no?
Submitted by Kaela

"I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about circumcision? I wanted my son to be circumcised but my mum told me I couldn't because they don't do it anymore unless it is for a religious reason (which it wouldn't be in this case), but I have been recently told thats not true. Does anyone know? Also my son is 1 (this Saturday) is he too old now? Thanks "

hey, i never even thought about getting my son circumcized until about 6 months ago (my son is 2 1/2) but i decided against it now as he is older and after reading alot of information they recon it hurts alot as they get older & start fiddling with it and stuff. there are not many doctors that do it now but there are still some around. so you may have to ring around to find out who does it. as alot of doctors wont do it after a certain age. let me know how you go coz if you decide to get it done i just wanted to know if it is as bad as they say it is. sorry i couldnt be more help.

Theres so many mixed stories about circumcision.. I actualy went to a peadatric nurse before my son was one and she sat down and told me the pros and cons to gettin it done.. it comes with a hefty price tag as well.. we were told we were lookin at payin 1500 dollars to have him done... Its a very personal choice whether you would go through with it.. The nurse made me realise alot of kids these days arent actually done compared to back when their fathers were... Ive left the choice up to my son whens hes old enough to know and understand... If he wants it done then we would do it but if hes happy the way he is then we will be happy with whatever choice he makes..

my midwife gave me numbers of the doctors that will do it so u might have to ask a hospital or call one of those numbers in your blue book. u dont have to be religeous to get it done anyone can do it. some are expensive but it only cost me about $150. personally i find it cleaner as my partner is circumsised as well neither of us would have an idea of how to teach our son to clean inside it when he gets older.dont let people persuade u its a personal choice. my midwife told me it comes in and out of "fashion" it really is a personal choice.1 isnt to old ive heard of teenagers doing it and older men

We got my son done at 2, as they dont like to do them at birth anymore. The doctors prefer their little bits to grow in a little better first. It is a personal choice. And I personally believe it looks better. it easier for him to clean and everything.
They are put to sleep for the op, and yes, are in a little bit of pain when they wake up, but they are able to have panadol, and they have you are given a numbing cream to put on it. It looks horrible for the first few days, and my son was only in pain for about 2 days max, Lots of cuddles and kisses, and his fav movies helped keep his mind off it. He basically just layed on the floor most of the time. Its a hard thing as a parent to see your child go through something like that. But I believe its all worth it in the end. Good luck with what you choose to do....Oh and it was under about $300 for us too.

hi, i got my son, circed, when he was 6 days old.. it cost absolutely nothing and as much as it broke my heart i would do it again in a heartbeat. i ahev had 4 adult male friends have to be done, and it is alot crueler when they are older. i do understand it is a very personal thing and would never push my beliefs on it. but i was told that he had to be under 21 days old, or he had to wiat until he was 5... but i dunno whether that was just the doctor that i went to... hope that helps..
