A question of night feeding
Submitted by Katie

"Hi, I was wondering how often everyone feeds their babies at night time?  My little girl Alice is 8 months old and I'm still having to get up to breast feed her an average of 4 times a night!  Is anyone else in the same boat or have any ideas on how to reduce her feeds?  I'm terrified of her going hungry if don't get up each time!"

I know how you feel.At 7 months my daughter Baylie was waking around 4 times a night and out of ease I was feeding her back to sleep. Now she is 10 months and is sleeping 10-11hrs without a feed. So don't stress too much because things change so quickly with babies! They soon sort themselves out I think!

But I know that doesn't help you for the time being so maybe try these:Does she use a dummy? If so, is she losing it and waking because of that? Try pinning it to her pj's with some ribbon so she can find it again. Is she moving around the cot? I introduced cot bumpers which reduced Baylie waking to once or twice a night immediately. If it is hot and Baylie wakes I offer her water before milk, just keep her sippycup near her cot.

Also, do you feed her to sleep, or does she self-settle in her cot? I am just on the verge of putting Bay down awake and letting her settle herself at night and I believe thats makes a big difference to how she sleeps at night. It could be that your bub is just waking(like all bubs do) and just cant get herself back to sleep.

What sort of solids are you offering her at dinner time? As the size and substance of her meals increase she should be satisfied for longer and not be waking hungry.I think it is totally acceptable for an 8 month old to still be having a night feed, (even though alot of my friends who are mums tried to stop this at around 3 months!!) Breastfed bubs dont stay full for as long as bottlefed bubs and it could be more of a comfort thing for her than a need for food.

It could be a few things.she might not be getting full enough or enough nutrients from your breast milk anymore. and like bays mama said is she having solids etc.my son started sleeping through when he was 2 or 3 months old i know all babies are different but 4 times is way to much for an 8 month old. try make her dinner like half hour to an hour before bed then bath then breast milk and bottle and see how she goes u may also need to drag out the last part of her routine.maybe not put her to bed till abit later.all these things worked for me.

I'm the same as whitney my daughter slept all the way through at 2 months and still does she is on formula though I dont know if that makes a difference or not. maybe you could express a whole bottle that way you know she is getting enough to fill her so she will sleep all night. I think by 8 months she should be sleeping through all night and having 2-3 smaller naps during the day.

Congratulations on doing a fine job breastfeeding your baby. I have four children, and yes, your daughter is very normal in waking for frequent night feedings. Her stomach is very tiny, only as small as her fist at best, and breastmilk is digested very quickly because it is such a pure, perfect food. Frequent feeds are also natures way of making sure she remains hydrated and nourished and nurtured throughout the night as well as, according to recent research, protecting her from SIDS by maintaining her blood sugar levels. She will only a little baby for such a short period of time. Enjoy those feeds, as they are so precious! You are doing a fabulous job! Keep up the wonderful work!!
